Main Beach 4

There is no postmark or date on this postcard which shows Port Stanley’s main beach but we believe that the photograph would have been taken in the late 1920s. The large white building on the far left of the photograph would have been the Stanley Beach Casino which burned down in April of 1932. The large building on the right was the London and Port Stanley Dance Pavilion (later named the Stork Club) which opened its doors on July 29, 1926. It was built by the L&PS Railway Commission. On opening night, over 6000 people crowded into the pavilion to dance to the music of the Vincent Lopez Orchestra. It had a large maple dance floor, said to be the largest in Canada at the time.
