Port Stanley Public School

Port Stanley has had at least four elementary schools in the last 170 years. This one was built in 1908 at the south end of Francis Street, where the post office is today. Agnes Hepburn who taught there for many years tells us in her monograph entitled “Historical Sketch of the Village of Port Stanley” that the school shown on this postcard was on the same site as Port Stanley’s first school, built in 1837. The school shown here had two classrooms and a library downstairs and two classrooms and the principal’s office upstairs.
